Those of us born in the 80’s likely feel a strong attachment to the decade. And just as we who lean on our mothers for support as we become mothers ourselves might begin to resemble them, we who have added Adidas Originals to our wardrobes are also dressing like them too. Especially in our family where my father, who played professional football, had a shoe contract with Adidas. He was always bringing home interesting new things for us to wear.

Today with woman multitasking more than ever, a country-style sports jacket traditionally worn by men can be a fantastic fit for today’s millennial woman. With a couple of special touches like: a soft wool-silk body to allow greater movement, shoulder pads for shape, leather for looks and wear, together they provide the look and feel of both softness and strength. Most importantly, the leather elbow patches serve as great tabletop grips or anchors while holding a baby and putting finishing touches on last-minute computer work.

I designed and created this plaid and taupe jacket for my sister whose busy life inspired this piece. Originally, I planned to create a Ukrainian inspired winter coat for her, but she requested that I make something more suited to her present lifestyle. This jacket is very similar to the one worn by Julia Roberts in a bygone era, with the exception that it has deep pockets for a bottle, diaper, and other essentials. These pockets are fashionably reinforced with matching cognac leather, which really helps if you have another one tugging at you from below!

I used Burdasyle’s 11/2013 Jacket #118 for the sewing pattern. (Size 38)

I added length to the sleeves(2″) and jacket.
